Crypto.com Arena transforms its roof into a sustainable energy powerhouse, overcoming engineering and waterproofing hurdles with cutting-edge solar technology.
Crypto.com Arena—formerly STAPLES Center—sought to install one of the largest rooftop solar arrays on a major sports and entertainment venue. However, the arena’s roof presented engineering constraints due to its cantilevered perimeter structure and suspended interior systems.
Any additional rooftop load required precise control over point loading and load distribution, limiting traditional mounting approaches. Water intrusion was also a non-negotiable concern, as even a single leak could have severe consequences for the arena floor. The arena required a solar attachment solution capable of addressing weight, load and watertightness challenges simultaneously.
Located in downtown Los Angeles, the arena features a cantilevered perimeter roof supported by load-bearing walls and a central dome.
The project ultimately delivered approximately 350 kW of rooftop solar PV, installed using Facet™ Mount.
The completed array demonstrates how solar energy can be successfully integrated into a highly complex, high-profile structure, reinforcing the arena’s role as a leader in sustainability and advanced building performance.

The project team reengineered both the array layout and the mounting approach, selecting Facet Mount as the only solution capable of performing.
Facet Mount also addressed the project’s non-negotiable waterproofing requirements. Its integrated waterproof washer and flashing system passed stringent industry testing for water infiltration. The raised crown design further reduced the risk of pooling or penetration.
With multiple attachment points and broad compatibility with roofing and racking systems, crews were able to finalize racking layouts before setting mount locations, simplifying installation.
The project exceeded revised expectations—successfully installing 1,727 solar panels while maintaining structural balance and watertight integrity.
