The S-5-Z (“Z” stands for Zip-Rib) is specially designed for round “bulb” seam configurations. Mount snow guards and other heavy-duty applications to “bulb” seam configurations, such as Zip-Rib®, BEMO, Kalzip® and other similar profiles. Easily install the two-piece clamp anywhere along the length of the rib.
Minis Available
The Z Mini clamp is a more economical solution for lighter-duty attachments where Herculean holding strength is not required.
The Z Mini clamp is a bit shorter than the standard Z with one setscrew rather than two.
All standard and Mini clamps undergo rigorous load testing. Negative load normal-to-seam testing (pull-up) is performed on all Mini clamps, and parallel-to-seam testing (drag load) is performed on all standard clamps.
Be sure to check out the many other features on the clamp overview page.
Sometimes the intended “bulb” diameter is larger than the specified dimension for the Z due to seam-closing error. This can be corrected by hand, closing the seam to its proper dimension at clamp locations.
Alternatively, the S-5-Q can be used when the (bulb) seam dimension is too large for the Z. The Q is designed to fit larger “bulb-shaped” profiles.
When a nut-and-bolt connection is required, see the S-5-ZF Mini.
Some bulb seam profiles utilize a stationary clip (or “halter”) to anchor the roof to the structure. This is typical of BEMO and Kalzip. (ZipRib generally utilizes a moveable two-piece clip.) When a stationary “halter” is used for roof attachment, the halter location must be avoided when using the S-5-Z. Alternatively, the S-5-ZH can be used at halter locations, preserving roof design integrity.
Bulb-Type Standing Seam
Using the ergonomic finger grip “tail” of the insert, position the insert at the desired location against the base of the seam and just below the bulbous portion (either side of the seam). Rotate the clamp into place over both the seam and insert. You can hold this assembly in place with one finger, while tightening the roundpoint Torx Drive (T30) setscrews to the specified tension. Then, affix ancillary items using the bolt (provided with standard Z clamp; sold separately for the Z Mini).

*S-5! clamps may be moved in the event of initial misplacement. However, due to the ensuing oxidation process which acts as a natural thread lock, we can express no opinion to the performance of a clamp once it has been removed and reinstalled or the ability to remove the clamp after this process has occurred.
All S-5! clamps undergo rigorous mechanical tensile load testing. We typically test in two load directions: Negative load normal-to-seam testing (pulling-up), and parallel-to-seam testing (drag load). We actually developed these test protocols back in 1992 as ASTM has no prescribed test procedures for this type of testing. For more on our testing protocols and results visit this link.
Our standard test procedures are to test the mini (one setscrew) clamps with negative load normal to seam, and standard (two setscrew) clamps with load parallel to seam. We have performed numerous parallel to seam datum tests on mini clamps and concluded from engineering analysis the mini clamp is (conservatively) obtaining more than ½ the strength of the standard clamps. In fact, the majority of the datum testing indicates the strength of a mini is closer to 2/3 the strength of a standard clamp. In due course, we are adding certified lab testing in this load direction for mini clamps.
In the interim, should certification of the load application parallel to seam be critical to your application, we suggest using the standard (two setscrew) design.
You can request our Clamp-to-Seam Gauge Tool from your Authorized S-5! Distributor or directly from S-5! The most common seam geometries are included within this fitment tool and it is cost-free. Keep it for future fitment checking.

If unsuccessful using the gauge tool, the fastest and easiest way to find the clamp you need is to visit our CLAMP TO SEAM TOOL on our website which takes you through a pictorial process of determining the proper clamp.
S-5! clamps will not fit on face-fastened trapezoidal rib or corrugated type panels. While our clamps won't work on thru-fastened roofs, we do have bracket products for them. Explore our entire line of brackets.
S-5! products will not fit to hollow “batten” seam type panels (see images in red below) - but can be used for the traditional (wood-backed) batten seam folded joints, as shown below in green.

Any time there is a folded seam we can usually attach a clamp to it. A great way to know if we have a product for your roof is to determine what the roof is with our "Clamp-to-Seam tool".
