The Challenge

Solar installers needed a solution that would allow them to ensure full utilisation of the limited rooftop space for mounting the solar panels, helping the hotel achieve maximum carbon emission reduction as well as lower energy consumption from the grid. They also needed a solution that would withstand high winds due to the location of the skyscraper on the edge of Sydney Harbour.

Rising above Darling Harbour, Crown Towers Sydney is a luxury resort in Barangaroo, Sydney’s newest waterfront precinct. Standing 275 m high, it is the tallest hotel in Sydney. The development features guest rooms, residential apartments, restaurants, retail outlets and spa facilities. Nearly 4 million hours of work supported construction.

The resort includes a KingSpan, KingZip standing seam metal roof with S-5! solutions securing 70 kW of solar PV. Its curved exterior reflects light throughout the day, creating the illusion of changing colours.

The Solution

They chose the S-5-Z™ and the S-5-Z Mini clamps (approximately 1,200) to support an aluminium flat plate on 0.9 mm and 0.5 mm thick KingSpan, KingZip Linea aluminium standing seam metal roofs, with on-site renewable energy generation including 70 kW of solar PV.

The S-5! non-penetrating seam clamps fit round “bulb” seam profiles, allowing maximum solar placement with certified holding strength to resist design wind speeds. The system was designed to withstand a 1,000-year windstorm, helping Crown Towers Sydney achieve a 6-Star Green Star rating.
