Scandinavian Home Furnishings Retailer Installs 1.7 MW Rooftop Solar Array in Colorado

The Centennial project used S-5!’s Facet Mount system to secure 3,360 solar modules atop a newly renovated 415,000-square-foot low-slope roof.

The Challenge

The primary challenge was installing a large-scale solar array without exceeding the existing retail building’s structural load limits. The team needed to reduce rooftop weight while ensuring the system remained secure, code-compliant and capable of withstanding Colorado’s high wind gusts, temperature swings and freeze-thaw cycles. Timing added another layer of complexity: the existing solar system had to be removed, the roof replaced with a new membrane and the new array installed—all through close coordination between the roofing and solar teams. Finally, the attachment system required manufacturer-approved flashing that matched the new roofing material, preserving a watertight seal, long-term roof integrity and warranty coverage.

Project Stats

The Centennial, Colorado, flagship location spans 415,000 square feet and features a large, low-slope rooftop. As part of a coordinated roof replacement and solar retrofit, the existing photovoltaic system was removed and recycled, a new Elevate KEE 80-mil single-ply membrane was installed, and a new 1.7 MW DC solar array was added. The completed system includes 3,360 JA Solar 545-watt modules supported by a hybrid PanelClaw racking design and 167 S-5! Facet Mount attachments.

The Solution

The team selected S-5!’s Facet Mount system to mechanically secure the solar array while reducing reliance on heavy concrete ballast. Its low-profile raised plate accommodates multiple fasteners beneath a single molded membrane layer, delivering exceptional uplift and shear resistance for Colorado’s demanding wind conditions. After each mount was secured to the roof deck, certified roofers heat-welded a pre-cut Elevate membrane cover over the base to create a watertight seal and preserve the roofing manufacturer’s warranty. The lightweight, repeatable installation process reduced manual labor and improved jobsite safety, while the system’s high structural capacity allowed engineers to use fewer attachments without compromising strength or code compliance. Integrated with PanelClaw’s dual-tilt racking, Facet Mount provided a durable, roof-friendly hybrid solution for the new 1.7 MW array.

“The installers just love it – it’s easy to install, the roofers’ flashings are easily applied, and it goes down quickly. I would recommend using Facet Mount for any commercial roofing project. I’ve used other mechanical attachments, and Facet Mount is so much easier to use and is superior to all the rest.”
